📘 About the Interest Rate

Sometimes you know the loan amount, the EMI and the tenure but not the interest rate — for example when a car dealer or a shop quotes only the EMI. This calculator works out the annual interest rate hidden in those numbers.

It searches for the rate that gives exactly your EMI for that loan and tenure, then shows the total interest and a year-by-year principal and interest table. Use it to compare 'zero-cost' or flat-rate offers with a normal reducing-balance loan.

🧮 Formula

EMI for a trial rate
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1]

Where

  • P = loan amount
  • r = trial monthly rate = annual rate ÷ 12
  • n = number of instalments = years × 12
There is no direct formula for r, so the calculator tries rates between 0% and 100% and repeatedly halves the range until the EMI matches yours.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why check the interest rate hidden in an EMI?

Some offers advertise a low 'flat' rate or only an EMI. The true annual rate on the reducing balance is usually much higher than a flat rate.

Is the result exact?

It is accurate to several decimal places, but it assumes equal monthly instalments and no fees. Processing fees raise your real cost.

Where can I use this calculator?

This one runs in the Financial Calculator Android app. The other loan calculators on this page work in your browser.

How do I find the interest rate from EMI?

There is no direct formula, so the rate is found by trial: the calculator tries rates until the EMI formula gives your EMI.

What is a flat rate vs reducing rate?

A flat rate charges interest on the full loan for the whole term; the same EMI under a reducing balance means an interest rate almost twice as high. This calculator shows the true reducing rate.
