📘 About the Australian GPA

Australian universities grade units as High Distinction (HD), Distinction (D), Credit (C), Pass (P) and Fail (F or N). Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of the grade points for those grades.

Most universities, including the Group of Eight, use a 7-point scale (HD = 7 … P = 4); several others use a 4-point scale (HD = 4 … P = 1). Choose your university's scale, then each unit's grade and credit points (often 6, 10 or 12 — see your handbook).

🧮 Formula

GPA
GPA = Σ(Cᵢ × Gᵢ) ÷ ΣCᵢ

Where

  • Cᵢ = credit points of unit i
  • Gᵢ = grade points of unit i
Some universities give a fail 1, 2 or 3 points depending on the mark; this calculator counts every fail as 0.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA in Australia?

On the 7-point scale, 5 (a Credit average) is solid, 5.5 – 6 is very good and above 6 is excellent. Honours and scholarships usually need 5.5 or more.

How do I convert a 7-point GPA to a 4-point GPA?

Grades map one to one (HD 7 → 4, D 6 → 3, C 5 → 2, P 4 → 1), so switch the scale above to see your 4-point GPA.
