📘 About the Density
Density tells you how much mass is packed into a given volume. This density calculator finds density, mass or volume when you know the other two, using ρ = m ÷ V.
Work in grams and cubic centimetres (1 cm³ = 1 mL). The density is shown in g/cm³ and in the SI unit kg/m³. Anything denser than water (1 g/cm³) sinks in it; anything less dense floats.
🧮 Formula
To find the volume of an irregular object, lower it into a measuring cylinder of water and read how much the level rises.
✏️ Worked examples
Block of aluminium
You get| Density (g/cm³) | 2.7 |
| Density (kg/m³) | 2,700 |
| Mass (g) | 270 |
| Volume (cm³) | 100 |
270 g in 100 cm³ is 2.7 g/cm³ (2,700 kg/m³), the density of aluminium.
Try this example →Mass of 1 litre of milk
You get| Density (g/cm³) | 1.03 |
| Density (kg/m³) | 1,030 |
| Mass (g) | 1,030 |
| Volume (cm³) | 1,000 |
1,000 cm³ of milk at 1.03 g/cm³ has a mass of 1,030 g.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for density?
Density = mass ÷ volume (ρ = m/V).
What is the density of water?
About 1 g/cm³, which is 1,000 kg/m³ (exactly 0.99997 g/cm³ at 4 °C).
How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?
Multiply by 1,000. For example, 2.7 g/cm³ = 2,700 kg/m³.
Why does ice float?
Ice (0.92 g/cm³) is less dense than liquid water (1.00 g/cm³).
