📘 About the Planetary Hours

Medieval astrologers, physicians and magicians divided the time from sunrise to sunset, and from sunset to the next sunrise, into 12 unequal 'planetary hours' each. Every hour is ruled by one of the seven classical planets.

The first hour after sunrise belongs to the planet that names the day — the Sun on Sunday, the Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday and so on — and the rest follow the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. Pick a date and place to see all 24 hours.

Why is Tuesday the day of Mars?

Its first planetary hour is ruled by Mars; the weekday names in many languages (mardi, martes, Mangalvar) come from the same system.

What is the Chaldean order?

The seven classical planets from slowest to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon.
