📘 About the Pressure

Pressure is how much force acts on each unit of area. The same force spread over a smaller area gives a higher pressure, which is why a knife cuts and snowshoes stop you sinking.

Enter the force in newtons and the area in m², cm² or mm². The calculator gives the pressure in pascals and converts it to kPa, bar, atmospheres and psi.

🧮 Formula

Pressure
P = F ÷ A

Where

  • P = pressure (Pa)
  • F = force acting at right angles to the surface (N)
  • A = area (m²)
  • 1 cm² = 0.0001 m²
For pressure in a liquid at depth h, use P = ρgh instead.

✏️ Worked examples

Standing on one foot

You enter
Force (F)600 N
Area (A)150
Area unitcm²
You get
Pressure (Pa = N/m²)40,000
Pressure (kPa)40
Pressure (bar)0.4
Pressure (atm)0.394769
Pressure (psi)5.80151

A 600 N person on 150 cm² exerts 40 kPa.

Drawing pin

You enter
Force (F)20 N
Area (A)0.1
Area unitmm²
You get
Pressure (Pa = N/m²)200,000,000
Pressure (kPa)200,000
Pressure (bar)2,000
Pressure (atm)1,973.85
Pressure (psi)29,007.5

20 N on a 0.1 mm² point gives 200,000,000 Pa — enough to push into wood.

🧭 How to use this calculator

What you enter

  • Force (F) (N)
  • Area (A)
  • Area unit

What you get

  • Pressure (Pa = N/m²)
  • Pressure (kPa)
  • Pressure (bar)
  • Pressure (atm)
  • Pressure (psi)

💡 Pressure unit conversions

  • 1 Pa = 1 N/m²
  • 1 kPa = 1,000 Pa
  • 1 bar = 100,000 Pa
  • 1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 1.01325 bar = 760 mmHg
  • 1 psi = 6,894.76 Pa

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for pressure?

Pressure = force ÷ area (P = F/A). The SI unit is the pascal (Pa), equal to 1 N/m².

Why does a sharp knife cut better?

Its edge has a tiny area, so the same force produces a much larger pressure.

How many pascals is 1 atmosphere?

101,325 Pa, or about 101.3 kPa.

How do I convert cm² to m²?

Divide by 10,000. For example, 50 cm² = 0.005 m².
