📘 About the Simplify Fraction
A fraction is in lowest terms (simplest form) when its numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1. For example 18/24 simplifies to 3/4 because both numbers divide by 6.
Enter a numerator and denominator and the calculator finds their greatest common divisor, divides both by it, and shows the simplified fraction along with the mixed-number form and the decimal value.
🧮 Formula
✏️ Worked examples
18/24
You get| Simplified fraction | 3/4 |
| As a mixed number | 3/4 |
| Greatest common divisor | 6 |
| As a decimal | 0.75 |
The greatest common divisor is 6, so 18/24 becomes 3/4.

You get| Simplified fraction | 7/2 |
| As a mixed number | 3 1/2 |
| Greatest common divisor | 5 |
| As a decimal | 3.5 |

❓ Frequently asked questions
What does 'lowest terms' mean?
It means the numerator and denominator have no common factor except 1, so the fraction cannot be written with smaller whole numbers.
Can I simplify a negative fraction?
Yes. A minus sign on either the numerator or the denominator is treated as a negative fraction, and the result keeps the sign on the top.
What if the fraction is already simple?
Then the greatest common divisor is 1 and the fraction is returned unchanged.
