📘 About the Speed, Distance & Time

This speed distance time calculator finds any one of the three when you know the other two. Choose what you want to find, enter the other two values and it uses the formula speed = distance ÷ time, rearranged as needed.

Results are shown in kilometres per hour and metres per second, and time in both hours and minutes, so it works for school physics problems, journey planning and running or cycling pace.

🧮 Formula

Speed
s = d ÷ t
Distance
d = s × t
Time
t = d ÷ s

Where

  • s = speed (km/h)
  • d = distance (km)
  • t = time (hours)
  • To change km/h to m/s divide by 3.6; m/s to km/h multiply by 3.6
This gives average speed. If speed changes during a journey, total distance ÷ total time is the average, not the average of the speeds.

✏️ Worked examples

Average speed of a car

You enter
FindSpeed
Distance150 km
Time2.5 hours
You get
Speed (km/h)60
Speed (m/s)16.6667
Distance (km)150
Time (hours)2.5
Time (minutes)150

150 km in 2.5 hours is an average speed of 60 km/h, or 16.6667 m/s.

💡 The speed distance time triangle

Write D at the top of a triangle and S and T at the bottom. Cover the one you want: D = S × T, S = D ÷ T and T = D ÷ S. Always use matching units — km with hours, or metres with seconds.

💡 Average speed for a two-part journey

If you drive 60 km at 30 km/h and then 60 km at 60 km/h, the average speed is not 45 km/h. The trip takes 2 h + 1 h = 3 h for 120 km, so the average is 40 km/h. Always divide total distance by total time.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for speed?

Speed = distance ÷ time. If you travel 100 km in 2 hours, your speed is 50 km/h.

How do I convert km/h to m/s?

Divide by 3.6. For example, 72 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 20 m/s. To go from m/s to km/h, multiply by 3.6.

How do I find time from speed and distance?

Time = distance ÷ speed. 180 km at 60 km/h takes 3 hours.

Is speed the same as velocity?

No. Speed is how fast something moves. Velocity is speed in a given direction, so it is a vector. This calculator works with speed.
