📘 About the Weight on Planets

Your mass is the same everywhere, but your weight depends on gravity. This calculator multiplies your mass by the surface gravity of a planet or moon, W = mg, to give your weight there in newtons.

It also shows what an ordinary bathroom scale (which is calibrated for Earth) would read: on the Moon a 60 kg person would see about 9.9 kg.

🧮 Formula

Weight
W = m × g
Scale reading
reading = m × g_planet ÷ g_Earth

Where

  • W = weight (N)
  • m = mass (kg)
  • g = surface gravity (m/s²); Earth = 9.81 m/s²
Gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) have no solid surface; their g is quoted at the cloud tops.

✏️ Worked examples

60 kg on the Moon

You enter
Your mass60 kg
Planet or moonMoon (1.62 m/s²)
You get
Weight there (N)97.2

🧭 How to use this calculator

What you enter

  • Your mass (kg)
  • Planet or moon

What you get

  • Weight there (N)
  • A scale would read (kg)
  • Gravity compared with Earth (×)
  • Weight on Earth (N)

💡 Why is gravity different on each planet?

Surface gravity depends on a planet's mass and radius: g = GM ÷ r². The Moon has about 1/81 of Earth's mass, so even though it is smaller, its surface gravity is only about one-sixth of Earth's.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does my mass change on the Moon?

No. Mass is the amount of matter in you and stays the same. Only your weight, the pull of gravity, changes.

How much less do you weigh on the Moon?

About one-sixth (16.5%) of your Earth weight, because the Moon's gravity is 1.62 m/s².

Where would I weigh the most?

Of the planets, on Jupiter, about 2.5 times your Earth weight.

What is the formula for weight?

Weight = mass × acceleration due to gravity, W = mg, measured in newtons.
