Assessment
A normal rise for an early pregnancy
Readings
120 → 260 mIU/ml

hCG ranges are very wide and overlap, so one number cannot date a pregnancy or show whether it is healthy. Doctors look at the change over 48 hours and, from about 1,500–2,000 mIU/ml, at the ultrasound.

📘 About the hCG Doubling

hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is the pregnancy hormone measured by blood and urine tests. In a healthy early pregnancy it roughly doubles every 2–3 days until about 6–7 weeks, then rises more slowly and peaks at 8–11 weeks.

Enter two results and the hours between them to see the doubling time and the rise over 48 hours. Doctors generally expect a rise of at least 35% in 48 hours; a slower rise or a fall is followed up with repeat tests and an ultrasound.

🧮 Formula

Doubling time
Doubling time = hours × ln 2 ÷ ln(second ÷ first)
48-hour rise
Rise = (second ÷ first)^(48 ÷ hours) − 1

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is a normal hCG doubling time?

About 48–72 hours while hCG is under 1,200 mIU/ml, 72–96 hours between 1,200 and 6,000, and longer above 6,000.

What is the minimum normal rise in 48 hours?

At least about 35%. A 49% or greater rise is reassuring; most viable pregnancies rise 50–100% or more.

What hCG level means I'm pregnant?

Under 5 mIU/ml is negative and over 25 mIU/ml is positive; 5–25 is a grey zone to repeat in 2 days.

Can hCG levels predict twins?

Twins often have higher levels, but the ranges overlap so much that only an ultrasound can tell.
