📘 About the Chinese Gender Chart

The Chinese gender predictor reads the traditional Chinese gender chart (also called the Chinese gender calendar or Chinese birth chart) for you. Enter the mother's date of birth and the conception date or due date. The calculator converts both to the Chinese lunar calendar, works out the mother's lunar age and the lunar month of conception, and shows what the old chart says.

Please read this first: the chart is folklore, not science. The largest study of it, covering 2.8 million births, found it right about half the time, exactly what you would get by tossing a coin. It is shown here only as a piece of cultural history and for fun. Power Calculators does not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious.

Pre-natal sex determination and sex selection are illegal in India under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) Act, 1994, and are restricted in many other countries. Never use this chart, or anything else, to make a decision about a pregnancy.

🧮 Formula

Mother's lunar (Chinese) age at conception
Lunar age = lunar year of conception − lunar year of mother's birth + 1
Conception date from a due date
Conception ≈ due date − 266 days
Reading the chart
Chart value = row for lunar age (18–45) × column for lunar month (1–12)

Where

  • Lunar year = the Chinese year a date falls in; it starts at Chinese New Year (between 21 January and 20 February), not on 1 January
  • Lunar month = the Chinese lunar month (1 to 12) that the conception date falls in
  • 266 days = 38 weeks, the average time from conception to the due date
Some Chinese years have a 13th, repeated 'leap' month. A conception in a leap month is read in the column of the month it repeats. The chart only has rows for lunar ages 18 to 45.

💡 Important disclaimer — please read

This page is for entertainment and general information only. The Chinese gender chart has no scientific or medical basis and cannot tell you the sex of a baby. Its result is a guess with about a 50% chance of being right.

Power Calculators does not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious. We do not offer, advertise or refer anyone to any service for finding out or choosing a baby's sex, and no feature on this site is meant for planning a pregnancy around the sex of the baby. For the same reason we do not publish the chart as a planning grid or suggest 'best months' to conceive a boy or a girl.

Nothing on this page is medical or legal advice. For anything about your pregnancy, talk to a qualified doctor.

💡 The law: sex determination and sex selection

India: the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC&PNDT Act) bans determining or revealing the sex of a foetus, bans sex selection before or after conception, and bans advertising any such service. Offences are punishable with imprisonment and fines, and doctors can lose their registration. Sex-selective abortion is also an offence.

Many other countries also restrict sex selection for non-medical reasons or ban sex-selective abortion. Laws differ from country to country, so it is your responsibility to follow the law where you live. If this page is not lawful where you are, please do not use it.

If you are being pressured to find out a baby's sex or to end a pregnancy because of it, you are not alone. In India you can call the Women Helpline on 181, or the emergency number 112.

💡 How the Chinese gender predictor works

  • Step 1: The mother's date of birth is converted to the Chinese lunar calendar to find her lunar birth year.
  • Step 2: The conception date is converted the same way, giving the lunar year and lunar month of conception. If you only know the due date, conception is taken as 266 days before it.
  • Step 3: Lunar age = lunar year of conception − lunar year of birth + 1.
  • Step 4: The chart is read at that lunar age (row) and lunar month (column).
  • The calculator uses lunar calendar tables for 1900 to 2099, so you don't need to convert anything by hand.

💡 Chinese lunar age explained

In the traditional Chinese way of counting, a baby is 1 year old at birth and everyone gains a year at Chinese New Year, not on their birthday. That is why lunar age is usually 1 or 2 years more than ordinary age.

Example: a mother born on 20 January 1995 was born before Chinese New Year 1995 (31 January), so her lunar birth year is 1994. A conception on 1 March 2026 falls after Chinese New Year 2026 (17 February), in lunar year 2026, lunar month 1. Her lunar age is 2026 − 1994 + 1 = 33, even though she is 31 by her birthday.

Example: a conception on 10 February 2026 is before Chinese New Year 2026, so it still belongs to lunar year 2025, lunar month 12.

💡 How accurate is the Chinese gender chart?

Not accurate. Researchers from the University of Michigan and the Karolinska Institute checked the chart against 2,840,755 births in Sweden between 1973 and 2006 (Villamor and colleagues, Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology, 2010). The chart was right about 50% of the time, no better than chance.

Websites that claim 70% to 90% accuracy are counting the people who remember a correct guess. With only two possible answers, any guess is right about half the time.

💡 Where the chart comes from

Popular stories say the chart was found in an ancient royal tomb near Beijing, or that it was kept by the Qing dynasty court. None of these stories has been verified, and there is no known historical source for it. Different websites also print slightly different versions of the chart. This calculator uses the most widely reproduced version.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the Chinese gender predictor?

It is a calculator that reads the traditional Chinese gender chart, a folklore table said to show a baby's sex from the mother's lunar age and the lunar month of conception. It has no scientific basis and is right about 50% of the time, so treat it only as a bit of fun and cultural history.

How does the Chinese gender chart work?

The chart has a row for each lunar age from 18 to 45 and a column for each lunar month from 1 to 12. You find the mother's lunar age at conception and the lunar month of conception, and read the cell where they meet. This calculator does the lunar calendar conversion for you.

How do I calculate my Chinese lunar age?

Take the lunar year of conception, subtract your lunar birth year and add 1. Lunar years start at Chinese New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February, so if you were born in January or early February your lunar birth year may be the previous year. Lunar age is usually 1 or 2 years more than your ordinary age.

How accurate is the Chinese gender predictor?

About 50%, the same as tossing a coin. A study of 2.8 million Swedish births published in 2010 found the chart did no better than chance.

Is there a different Chinese gender chart for 2026 or 2027?

No. There is only one chart and it does not change from year to year. What changes is the calendar: Chinese New Year and the lunar months fall on different dates each year, which this calculator takes into account.

What if I don't know my conception date?

Choose 'Due date' and enter your due date. Conception is then taken as 266 days (38 weeks) earlier. If conception was close to the start or end of a lunar month, the result can change, which is one more reason not to rely on it.

What if I conceived in a Chinese leap month?

Some years have a repeated 13th month called a leap month. The calculator reads a leap month in the column of the month it repeats, which is the most common convention.

Why does it say my age is outside 18 to 45?

The traditional chart only has rows for lunar ages 18 to 45, so it gives no answer outside that range.

Can the Chinese gender chart help me conceive a boy or a girl?

No. The chart cannot predict or influence a baby's sex, and timing conception by month makes no difference. We do not offer any gender selection tool. Sex selection is illegal in India and restricted in many other countries.

Is it legal to find out a baby's sex in India?

No. Under the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, determining or revealing the sex of a foetus is illegal in India, and so is sex selection. No doctor, clinic or test may tell you the baby's sex before birth. This chart is folklore and does not determine anything.

Does Power Calculators support gender prediction?

No. We do not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. This page explains a well-known piece of folklore and why it does not work. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious.
