📘 About the Remainder

A remainder is what is left after division when the division is not exact.

The calculator also shows the integer quotient used to construct the remainder.

🧮 Formula

Integer quotient
Quotient = floor(Dividend ÷ Divisor)
Remainder
Remainder = Dividend − Divisor × Quotient

Where

  • Dividend = number being divided
  • Divisor = number dividing it
  • Quotient = floor(Dividend ÷ Divisor)
For positive integer inputs, 0 <= remainder < divisor when divisor is positive.

✏️ Worked example

17 divided by 5

You enter
Dividend17
Divisor5
You get
Integer Quotient3
Remainder2

The quotient is 3 and the remainder is 2.
