📘 About the Wave Speed

Every wave obeys the wave equation: speed = frequency × wavelength. Choose what you want to find and enter the other two values. The calculator also gives the time period, the time for one complete wave to pass.

The equation works for any wave — sound, water waves, waves on a string, and light and radio waves (where v = 3 × 10⁸ m/s).

🧮 Formula

Wave equation
v = f × λ
Time period
T = 1 ÷ f

Where

  • v = wave speed (m/s)
  • f = frequency (Hz, waves per second)
  • λ (lambda) = wavelength (m)
  • T = time period (s)
When a wave passes into a new medium its frequency stays the same; its speed and wavelength change.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for wave speed?

Wave speed = frequency × wavelength (v = fλ).

What is the unit of frequency?

Hertz (Hz), meaning waves per second.

How are frequency and period related?

T = 1/f. A 50 Hz wave has a period of 0.02 s.

Does frequency change when sound enters water?

No. The frequency stays the same; the speed and wavelength increase.
