📘 About the Photon Energy

Light comes in packets of energy called photons. A photon's energy depends only on its frequency: E = hf, where h is Planck's constant. Since c = fλ, this is also E = hc ÷ λ — shorter wavelengths carry more energy.

Enter a wavelength in nanometres or a frequency in hertz. The calculator gives the energy in joules and in electronvolts, the unit used in atomic physics and the photoelectric effect.

🧮 Formula

Planck's equation
E = h f
In terms of wavelength
E = h c ÷ λ
Handy shortcut
E (eV) ≈ 1240 ÷ λ (nm)

Where

  • E = photon energy (J or eV)
  • h = Planck's constant, 6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s
  • f = frequency (Hz)
  • c = speed of light, 2.998 × 10⁸ m/s
  • λ = wavelength (m)
  • 1 eV = 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ J
Visible light runs from about 400 nm (violet, ≈3.1 eV) to 700 nm (red, ≈1.8 eV).

💡 Photon energy and the photoelectric effect

Electrons are emitted from a metal only if each photon has more energy than the metal's work function φ. The maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons is KE = hf − φ. This is why bright red light may emit no electrons while dim ultraviolet light does.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for photon energy?

E = hf = hc/λ.

What is Planck's constant?

h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s, an exact value since 2019.

How do I convert joules to electronvolts?

Divide by 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹. 1 eV = 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ J.

Which colour of light has the most energy per photon?

Violet, because it has the shortest wavelength of visible light.
