📘 About the CGPA to Percentage

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of your grade points over all semesters, usually on a 10-point scale. Job applications, entrance exams and universities abroad often ask for a percentage instead, so you need to convert it.

There is no single national formula: each board or university publishes its own. Pick the formula from the list — the hint after each one shows who uses it — and the percentage appears instantly. If your marksheet prints a different multiplier, choose "Custom multiplier".

🧮 Formula

CBSE, DU CBCS
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
VTU 2021+, Anna, AKTU
Percentage = CGPA × 10
JNTU, GTU
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
VTU 2015–18, MAKAUT
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Where

  • CGPA = cumulative grade point average (10-point scale)
  • m = custom multiplier
The right formula is the one printed on your marksheet or in your university's ordinance.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Multiply your CGPA by the factor your university uses. For CBSE and many universities it is 9.5, so 8.4 CGPA = 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. VTU (2021 onwards), Anna University and AKTU use × 10, and JNTU uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10.

Why is CGPA multiplied by 9.5?

CBSE found that the average marks of students across grade bands were about 9.5 times their grade points, so it adopted 9.5 as the conversion factor. Many universities copied it.

What is 8 CGPA in percentage?

76% with × 9.5, 80% with × 10, 75% with (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 and 72.5% with (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

What is 7 CGPA in percentage?

66.5% with × 9.5, 70% with × 10, 65% with (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 and 62.5% with (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

Is CGPA × 9.5 valid for every university?

No. It is only valid where your board or university says so. Many universities now use × 10 or their own equation, so check your marksheet.
