📘 About the SGPA Calculator

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester. Subjects with more credits count more: an A+ in a 4-credit subject moves your SGPA more than an A+ in a 1-credit lab.

Pick the grade of each subject and type its credits (both are on your result sheet). Leave unused rows as "— (not taken)". The grades follow the UGC 10-point scale used by most Indian universities; if your university's grade points differ, choose the grade with the same points.

🧮 Formula

SGPA
SGPA = Σ(Cᵢ × Gᵢ) ÷ ΣCᵢ

Where

  • Cᵢ = credits of subject i
  • Gᵢ = grade point of subject i
A fail (F) counts with 0 points and its credits, so it lowers the SGPA until you clear it.

✏️ Worked example

6 subjects (default values)

You enter
Subject 1 gradeA+ – 9
Subject 1 credits4
Subject 2 gradeA – 8
Subject 2 credits4
Subject 3 gradeO – 10
Subject 3 credits3
Subject 4 gradeB+ – 7
Subject 4 credits3
Subject 5 gradeA – 8
Subject 5 credits2
Subject 6 gradeA+ – 9
Subject 6 credits1
Subject 7 grade— (not taken)
Subject 7 credits3
Subject 8 grade— (not taken)
Subject 8 credits3
Subject 9 grade— (not taken)
Subject 9 credits3
Subject 10 grade— (not taken)
Subject 10 credits3
You get
SGPA8.47
Total credits17
Total credit points (Σ credits × grade points)144

(9×4 + 8×4 + 10×3 + 7×3 + 8×2 + 9×1) ÷ 17 = 144 ÷ 17 = 8.47.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How is SGPA calculated?

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add these up, and divide by the total credits. 4 credits at A+ (9) and 3 credits at A (8) give (36 + 24) ÷ 7 = 8.57.

Do failed subjects count in SGPA?

In most universities yes: an F carries 0 grade points with its credits, which pulls the SGPA down. Some universities show SGPA only when all subjects are cleared.

What is a good SGPA?

Above 8 is very good and above 9 is excellent. Many companies ask for 6 or 6.5 and above, without backlogs.

Are audit or non-credit courses included?

No. Courses with 0 credits do not affect SGPA — leave them out.
