📘 About the UK VAT Calculator
VAT (Value Added Tax) is charged on most goods and services sold by VAT-registered businesses in the UK. The standard rate is 20%; a reduced rate of 5% applies to things like domestic energy and children's car seats; and many essentials such as most food, books and children's clothes are zero-rated.
To add VAT, enter the net price. To work backwards from a price that already includes VAT, choose "Remove VAT": at 20% the VAT is one sixth of the gross price, not 20% of it.
🧮 Formula
At 20%, VAT in a gross price = gross ÷ 6.

❓ Frequently asked questions
How do I add 20% VAT?
Multiply the net price by 1.2. £100 + VAT = £120.
How do I remove 20% VAT?
Divide the gross price by 1.2, or take one sixth of it as the VAT. £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net; VAT £20.
Why isn't VAT 20% of the gross price?
Because the 20% was added to the net price. In a £120 price, the VAT (£20) is 20% of £100 but only 16.67% of £120.
When must I register for VAT?
When your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it to in the next 30 days alone.
