📘 About the Ideal Weight

Your ideal body weight (IBW) is a reference weight for your height and sex. Doctors use it for drug doses and nutrition planning, and it is a handy goal for anyone wanting to know 'how much should I weigh for my height?'

This calculator shows the four best-known formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — together with the healthy weight range from BMI 18.5 to 24.9, so you can see a realistic target range rather than one number.

Enter your height in centimetres (5 ft = 152.4 cm, 5 ft 6 in = 167.6 cm) and choose male or female.

🧮 Formula

Devine – men
IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Devine – women
IBW (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Robinson
Men 52 + 1.9 kg, women 49 + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 ft
Miller
Men 56.2 + 1.41 kg, women 53.1 + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 ft
Hamwi
Men 48 + 2.7 kg, women 45.5 + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 ft

Where

  • Height in inches = height in cm ÷ 2.54
  • 5 ft = 60 inches

❓ Frequently asked questions

How much should I weigh for my height?

A healthy weight is any weight that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. The ideal-weight formulas give one reference point inside or near that range.

What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 6 in man?

About 63.8 kg by the Devine formula, with a healthy BMI range of roughly 52 to 70 kg.

What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 3 in woman?

About 52.4 kg by the Devine formula, with a healthy BMI range of roughly 47 to 64 kg.

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal weight is a single formula value; a healthy weight is a range. Muscle, frame size and age all matter.

Why do men and women get different results?

Men usually have more muscle and bone mass at the same height, so the formulas start from a higher base for men.

Does it work for short or tall people?

The formulas were made for adults 5 ft (152 cm) and taller and are less reliable at the extremes. Use the BMI range there.
