Frequently asked questions

What is 4 in Roman numerals?

4 is IV (5 − 1). IIII is seen on some clock faces, but IV is the standard form.

Why is there no zero in Roman numerals?

Roman numerals were used for counting and recording amounts, not for place-value arithmetic, so they had no symbol for zero. Medieval writers sometimes used N (nulla).

What is the largest Roman numeral?

With standard symbols it is 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). A line over a numeral (vinculum) multiplies it by 1000, so V̄ is 5000.
