📘 About the Mole Fraction

The mole fraction of a component is its share of the total number of moles in a mixture. It has no unit and does not change with temperature. It is used in Raoult's law and for partial pressures of gases.

Enter the mass and molar mass of each component. The calculator converts both to moles and gives the mole fraction and mole percent of each.

🧮 Formula

Mole fraction
χA = nA ÷ (nA + nB)
Sum
χA + χB = 1

Where

  • χ (chi) = mole fraction (no unit)
  • n = moles = mass ÷ molar mass
Mole percent = mole fraction × 100.

✏️ Worked examples

46 g ethanol in 54 g water

You enter
Mass of component A46 g
Molar mass of A46.07 g/mol
Mass of component B54 g
Molar mass of B18.02 g/mol
You get
Mole fraction of A (χA)0.249879
Mole fraction of B (χB)0.750121
Mole percent of A24.99%
Moles of A (mol)0.998524
Moles of B (mol)2.9975

Ethanol's mole fraction is 0.249879, even though it is 46% of the mass.

Equal masses of methanol and water

You enter
Mass of component A50 g
Molar mass of A32.04 g/mol
Mass of component B50 g
Molar mass of B18.02 g/mol
You get
Mole fraction of A (χA)0.35989
Mole fraction of B (χB)0.64011
Mole percent of A35.99%
Moles of A (mol)1.56045
Moles of B (mol)2.77546

🧭 How to use this calculator

What you enter

  • Mass of component A (g)
  • Molar mass of A (g/mol)Ethanol 46.07, water 18.015.
  • Mass of component B (g)
  • Molar mass of B (g/mol)

What you get

  • Mole fraction of A (χA)
  • Mole fraction of B (χB)
  • Mole percent of A
  • Moles of A (mol)
  • Moles of B (mol)

💡 Mole fraction and Raoult's law

For an ideal solution the partial vapour pressure of each component is its mole fraction times the vapour pressure of the pure component: p_A = χA × p°A.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is mole fraction?

The number of moles of one component divided by the total number of moles in the mixture.

Does mole fraction have a unit?

No, it is a ratio.

What do all the mole fractions add up to?

Exactly 1.

Is mole fraction affected by temperature?

No, because it depends only on amounts, not volume.
