📘 About the Tons to Barrels

How many barrels are in a ton of oil? It depends on the oil's density, measured as API gravity: about 7.32 barrels per metric tonne for an average crude, 7.6 for light WTI and around 8.5 for petrol. Choose the oil, the kind of ton and the direction to convert.

Barrels are a volume (42 US gallons, 158.987 litres) and tons are a weight, so this converter uses the density: specific gravity = 141.5 ÷ (API + 131.5).

🧮 Formula

Specific gravity
SG = 141.5 ÷ (API + 131.5)
Barrels per tonne
bbl/t = 1000 ÷ (SG × 999.016 × 0.158987)

Where

  • API = API gravity of the oil
  • 1 barrel = 0.158987 m³ = 42 US gallons
  • 999.016 kg/m³ = density of water at 60 °F

❓ Frequently asked questions

How many barrels are in a metric ton of crude oil?

About 7.32 barrels for an average crude (API 33); light crudes like WTI give about 7.6 and heavy crudes about 6.9.

How do I convert tons to barrels?

Barrels = tons × 1,000 ÷ (density in kg/m³ × 0.158987). For API 33 crude that is about 7.32 barrels per tonne.

How many barrels is 300,000 tons of oil?

About 2.2 million barrels of average crude (300,000 × 7.32) — roughly a large tanker load.

What is a barrel of oil in litres?

One oil barrel is 42 US gallons = 158.987 litres.
