📘 About the Torque

Torque is the turning effect of a force about a pivot, also called the moment of a force. It depends on how hard you push, how far from the pivot you push, and the angle you push at: τ = rF sin θ.

That is why a longer spanner loosens a tight nut more easily, and why you push a door near its edge, at right angles, rather than near the hinges.

🧮 Formula

Torque
τ = r F sin θ
Force at right angles
τ = r × F

Where

  • τ (tau) = torque (N·m)
  • r = distance from the pivot to where the force acts (m)
  • F = force (N)
  • θ = angle between the force and the lever arm
In equilibrium, clockwise moments equal anticlockwise moments (the principle of moments).

✏️ Worked examples

Spanner on a wheel nut

You enter
Force (F)200 N
Distance from pivot (r)0.4 m
Angle between force and lever (θ)90 degrees
You get
Torque (N·m)80
Torque at 90° (N·m)80

Pushing at right angles gives 80 N·m.

Pushing at an angle

You enter
Force (F)200 N
Distance from pivot (r)0.4 m
Angle between force and lever (θ)30 degrees
You get
Torque (N·m)40
Torque at 90° (N·m)80

At 30° the same push gives only 40 N·m, half as much.

🧭 How to use this calculator

What you enter

  • Force (F) (N)
  • Distance from pivot (r) (m)Length of the spanner or lever arm.
  • Angle between force and lever (θ) (degrees)90° = pushing straight across the lever.

What you get

  • Torque (N·m)
  • Torque at 90° (N·m)

💡 Torque in everyday life

  • Door handles are placed far from the hinges for a large lever arm.
  • Car wheel nuts are tightened to a set torque, often 100–120 N·m.
  • Engine torque (N·m) measures how strongly an engine turns the wheels.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for torque?

τ = r × F × sin θ, where r is the distance from the pivot, F the force and θ the angle between them.

What is the unit of torque?

Newton-metre (N·m).

When is torque maximum?

When the force acts at 90° to the lever arm, so sin θ = 1.

Is torque the same as work?

No. Both can be written in N·m, but torque is a turning effect, while work (in joules) is energy transferred.
