📘 About the Triangle Area

This is the standard triangle area calculator for the most common school and everyday geometry problem.

The height is the perpendicular distance from the opposite vertex to the selected base. It is not necessarily one of the triangle sides.

The result is expressed in square units because two lengths are multiplied.

🧮 Formula

Triangle area
A = 1/2 × b × h

Where

  • A = triangle area
  • b = base
  • h = perpendicular height
Use the same unit for base and height.

✏️ Worked example

Base 12 cm and height 8 cm

You enter
Base12 cm
Perpendicular Height8 cm
You get
Triangle Area48
Valid Input1

The triangle has an area of 48 square centimetres.

🧭 How to use this calculator

What you enter

  • Base (cm)Enter the length of the base.
  • Perpendicular Height (cm)Height must be perpendicular to the selected base.

What you get

  • Triangle Area
  • Valid Input

💡 When to use this calculator

  • Use it when a base and its perpendicular altitude are known.
  • It works for acute, right, obtuse, isosceles and scalene triangles.
  • For an obtuse triangle, the perpendicular height may fall outside the base segment, but the same formula still applies.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for the area of a triangle?

Area equals one half multiplied by the base and the corresponding perpendicular height.

Does the height have to be perpendicular?

Yes. The height is the perpendicular distance to the selected base.

Can I use any side as the base?

Yes. Any side can be selected as the base as long as its corresponding perpendicular height is used.

What unit will the answer have?

The answer is in square units, such as cm², m² or ft².
