📘 About the Series & Parallel Resistors

Resistors can be joined end to end (in series) or side by side (in parallel). This calculator finds the equivalent resistance both ways for up to five resistors. Leave unused boxes at 0.

In series the same current flows through each resistor and the resistances add. In parallel each resistor has the same voltage and the total resistance falls, because the current has more paths.

🧮 Formula

Series
R = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + …
Parallel
1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃ + …
Two in parallel
R = R₁R₂ ÷ (R₁ + R₂)

Where

  • R₁, R₂, … = individual resistances (Ω)
  • Rₛ = equivalent series resistance
  • Rₚ = equivalent parallel resistance
n equal resistors R give nR in series and R ÷ n in parallel.

✏️ Worked examples

100 Ω, 220 Ω and 330 Ω

You enter
Resistor R1100 Ω
Resistor R2220 Ω
Resistor R3330 Ω
Resistor R40 Ω
Resistor R50 Ω
You get
Total in series (Ω)650
Total in parallel (Ω)56.8966
Resistors used3

In series they give 650 Ω; in parallel just 56.8966 Ω.

Two 10 Ω resistors

You enter
Resistor R110 Ω
Resistor R210 Ω
Resistor R30 Ω
Resistor R40 Ω
Resistor R50 Ω
You get
Total in series (Ω)20
Total in parallel (Ω)5
Resistors used2

Series: 20 Ω. Parallel: 5 Ω, half of one resistor.

🧭 How to use this calculator

What you enter

  • Resistor R1 (Ω)Leave as 0 if not used.
  • Resistor R2 (Ω)
  • Resistor R3 (Ω)
  • Resistor R4 (Ω)
  • Resistor R5 (Ω)

What you get

  • Total in series (Ω)
  • Total in parallel (Ω)
  • Resistors used

💡 Why household wiring is in parallel

Each appliance gets the full 230 V, can be switched on and off independently, and one failing doesn't cut the others off. In series, every device would share the voltage and all would go off together.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate resistors in series?

Add them: R = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + …

How do you calculate resistors in parallel?

Add the reciprocals and take the reciprocal: 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + …

Is parallel resistance less than the smallest resistor?

Yes, always.

What is the equivalent of two equal resistors in parallel?

Half of one of them: two 10 Ω resistors give 5 Ω.
