📘 About the Weighted Average

A weighted average gives different values different influence according to their weights.

Weights can be percentages, marks weights or other relative values. They do not have to add to 100 as long as the relative proportions are correct.

🧮 Formula

Weighted average
Weighted average = (x1w1 + x2w2) ÷ (w1 + w2)

Where

  • x1 and x2 = values
  • w1 and w2 = corresponding weights
The total weight should be non-zero.

✏️ Worked example

Marks weighted 40% and 60%

You enter
Value A80
Weight A40
Value B90
Weight B60
You get
Weighted Average86
Total Weight100
A Contribution32
B Contribution54

An 80 score weighted 40 and a 90 score weighted 60 give a weighted average of 86.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Do weights have to add to 100?

No. Only their relative proportions matter, although percentage weights commonly add to 100.

What happens if total weight is zero?

A weighted average is undefined when the total weight is zero; the current engine returns 0 for division by zero.
