📘 About the Car Affordability

The 20/4/10 rule suggests putting 20% down, financing for no more than 4 years, and keeping total transport costs under 10% of gross income. It stops a car from squeezing the rest of your budget.

Enter your income, what you already spend on transport, the interest rate and the loan term to see how much car you can afford.

🧮 Formula

Transport budget
Budget = 10% × monthly income
Room for a car payment
Car payment = Budget − other transport costs
Maximum loan
Loan = Car payment ÷ EMI factor
Maximum car price
Price = Loan ÷ 0.8 (a 20% down payment)

Where

  • EMI factor = r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1] per rupee of loan
  • r = monthly interest rate; n = number of months in the loan

❓ Frequently asked questions

What does the 10% include?

Loan payment, fuel, insurance, parking and maintenance together.

Why limit the loan to 4 years?

Cars lose value quickly. A short loan keeps you from owing more than the car is worth.

What if my transport costs are already high?

Then the room for a car payment shrinks, and the calculator will show a lower price or none.

What is the 20/4/10 rule for buying a car?

Pay at least 20% down, take a loan of no more than 4 years, and keep EMI plus fuel, insurance and service under 10% of gross income.

How much car can I afford on a ₹10 lakh salary?

About ₹2.5–4 lakh by the strict 20/4/10 rule, depending on your fuel and insurance costs; a looser rule of thumb is up to half your yearly income (₹5 lakh).

Does this work in the UK or US?

Yes — the 20/4/10 rule is the same everywhere; just enter amounts in your own currency.
