📘 About the Blood Renewal Theory

The blood renewal gender predictor applies the blood renewal theory, a folk belief that a man's blood 'renews' every 4 years and a woman's every 3 years. It says the parent whose blood renewed more recently has the 'younger, stronger' blood, and the baby will be the same sex as that parent. Enter both parents' dates of birth and the conception date or due date, and the calculator works out how long ago each parent's blood last 'renewed'.

Please read this first: the theory is folklore with no basis in biology, and no better than a coin toss. It is shown here only for fun. Power Calculators does not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious.

Pre-natal sex determination and sex selection are illegal in India under the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, and are restricted in many other countries. Never use this, or anything else, to make a decision about a pregnancy.

🧮 Formula

Father's blood
Years since father's last renewal = father's exact age at conception mod 4
Mother's blood
Years since mother's last renewal = mother's exact age at conception mod 3
The rule
Smaller number = 'younger' blood → baby is the same sex as that parent

Where

  • Exact age = age in years including the fraction of the year, on the day of conception
  • mod = the remainder after dividing (for example, 29.5 mod 4 = 1.5)
  • Conception ≈ due date − 266 days if you only know the due date
Some versions also 'reset' a parent's blood after major blood loss, surgery, a transfusion, blood donation or childbirth. This calculator uses the basic version with birth dates only.

💡 Important disclaimer — please read

This page is for entertainment and general information only. The blood renewal theory has no scientific or medical basis and cannot tell you the sex of a baby. Its answer is a guess with about a 50% chance of being right.

Power Calculators does not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious. We do not offer, advertise or refer anyone to any service for finding out or choosing a baby's sex, and no feature on this site is meant for planning a pregnancy around the sex of the baby. For the same reason we do not publish month-by-month planning grids or suggest 'best months' to conceive a boy or a girl.

Nothing on this page is medical or legal advice. For anything about your pregnancy, talk to a qualified doctor.

💡 The law: sex determination and sex selection

India: the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC&PNDT Act) bans determining or revealing the sex of a foetus, bans sex selection before or after conception, and bans advertising any such service. Offences are punishable with imprisonment and fines, and doctors can lose their registration. Sex-selective abortion is also an offence.

Many other countries also restrict sex selection for non-medical reasons or ban sex-selective abortion. Laws differ from country to country, so it is your responsibility to follow the law where you live. If this page is not lawful where you are, please do not use it.

If you are being pressured to find out a baby's sex or to end a pregnancy because of it, you are not alone. In India you can call the Women Helpline on 181, or the emergency number 112.

💡 How the blood renewal theory works

  • Step 1: Work out each parent's exact age on the day of conception.
  • Step 2: Divide the father's age by 4 and the mother's by 3, and keep the remainders. Each remainder is how many years ago that parent's blood last 'renewed'.
  • Step 3: The parent with the smaller remainder has the 'younger' blood, and the theory says the baby will be the same sex as that parent.
  • Example: at conception the mother is 29.8 (29.8 mod 3 = 2.8 years) and the father is 33.3 (33.3 mod 4 = 1.3 years). The father's blood is 'younger', so the theory says boy.

💡 What really happens to blood

Blood does renew itself, but continuously, not every 3 or 4 years. Red blood cells live for about 120 days, and the body makes new ones every day in the bone marrow. There is no 3-year or 4-year cycle in men or women.

A baby's sex is decided at fertilisation by whether the sperm carries an X or a Y chromosome. Blood plays no part, so this theory is right only about half the time, by chance.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the blood renewal theory?

It is a folk belief that a man's blood renews every 4 years and a woman's every 3 years, and that the parent with the more recently renewed blood decides the baby's sex. It has no basis in biology.

How do I calculate blood renewal for gender?

Divide the father's exact age at conception by 4 and the mother's by 3, and compare the remainders. The smaller remainder is the 'younger' blood, and the theory says the baby will share that parent's sex. This calculator does it for you from the dates of birth.

Does blood really renew every 3 or 4 years?

No. Red blood cells are replaced continuously and live for about 120 days. There is no 3- or 4-year cycle.

How accurate is the blood renewal method?

About 50%, the same as chance. Blood has nothing to do with whether a baby is a boy or a girl.

What about blood loss, surgery or donation?

Some versions say these 'reset' the blood. Since the theory itself has no basis, adjusting for them does not make it more accurate.

Can this help me conceive a boy or a girl?

No. No calendar, chart or folk method can influence or predict a baby's sex, and we do not offer any gender selection tool. Sex selection is illegal in India and restricted in many other countries.

Is it legal to find out a baby's sex in India?

No. Under the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, determining or revealing the sex of a foetus is illegal in India, and so is sex selection. No doctor, clinic or test may tell you the baby's sex before birth. Folk methods like this one do not determine anything.

Does Power Calculators support gender prediction?

No. We do not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. This page explains a piece of folklore and why it does not work. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious.
