📘 About the Japanese Gender Chart
The Japanese gender predictor reads the Japanese gender chart (also called the Japanese gender calendar or Japanese baby gender chart). Unlike the Chinese chart, it does not use the mother's age. It uses the birth months of both parents and the month of conception. Choose the three months and the calculator finds your 'couple number' and reads what the chart says for that month.
Please read this first: the chart is folklore, not science, and no better than a coin toss. It is shown here only as a piece of cultural history and for fun. Power Calculators does not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious.
Pre-natal sex determination and sex selection are illegal in India under the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, and are restricted in many other countries. Never use this chart, or anything else, to make a decision about a pregnancy.
🧮 Formula
Different websites print slightly different versions of Table 2 and turn the marks into made-up percentages. We show the marks themselves, because the percentages are not real probabilities.
💡 Important disclaimer — please read
This page is for entertainment and general information only. The Japanese gender chart has no scientific or medical basis and cannot tell you the sex of a baby. Its answer is a guess with about a 50% chance of being right.
Power Calculators does not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious. We do not offer, advertise or refer anyone to any service for finding out or choosing a baby's sex, and no feature on this site is meant for planning a pregnancy around the sex of the baby. For the same reason we do not publish month-by-month planning grids or suggest 'best months' to conceive a boy or a girl.
Nothing on this page is medical or legal advice. For anything about your pregnancy, talk to a qualified doctor.
💡 The law: sex determination and sex selection
India: the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC&PNDT Act) bans determining or revealing the sex of a foetus, bans sex selection before or after conception, and bans advertising any such service. Offences are punishable with imprisonment and fines, and doctors can lose their registration. Sex-selective abortion is also an offence.
Many other countries also restrict sex selection for non-medical reasons or ban sex-selective abortion. Laws differ from country to country, so it is your responsibility to follow the law where you live. If this page is not lawful where you are, please do not use it.
If you are being pressured to find out a baby's sex or to end a pregnancy because of it, you are not alone. In India you can call the Women Helpline on 181, or the emergency number 112.
💡 How the Japanese gender chart works
- Step 1: In Table 1, find where the mother's birth month (row) meets the father's birth month (column). That cell is your couple number, from 1 to 12.
- Step 2: In Table 2, go to the column for your couple number and find the month of conception. Each month has a number of marks for 'boy' and for 'girl'.
- Step 3: Whichever side has more marks is the chart's answer. A big difference is read as a strong lean, equal marks as no lean.
- Example: a mother born in June and a father born in February have couple number 2. For a conception in May, the chart shows 1 boy mark and 2 girl marks, a slight lean to girl.
💡 How accurate is the Japanese gender chart?
There is no evidence that it works. A baby's sex is decided at fertilisation by whether the sperm carries an X or a Y chromosome, which has nothing to do with anyone's birth month or the calendar month. With two possible answers, any guess is right about half the time, which is why the chart can seem to 'work' for some families.
The 'percentages' some sites show (such as 99% or 65%) are invented by converting the marks into numbers. They are not measured probabilities.
💡 Where the chart comes from
The Japanese chart is a folk table that is popular online, especially in Russian- and Japanese-language pregnancy forums. Its origin is unknown and there is no historical source for it. Japanese-language sites more often use a translated version of the Chinese gender chart than this one.
❓ Frequently asked questions
What is the Japanese gender predictor?
It is a calculator that reads the Japanese gender chart, a folk table that is said to show a baby's sex from both parents' birth months and the month of conception. It has no scientific basis and is no better than a coin toss.
How is the Japanese chart different from the Chinese chart?
The Chinese chart uses the mother's lunar age and the lunar month of conception. The Japanese chart ignores age and uses the father's and mother's birth months plus the ordinary calendar month of conception, in two steps.
What is the couple number?
It is the number from 1 to 12 that Table 1 gives for your pair of birth months. It tells you which column of Table 2 to read.
How accurate is the Japanese gender chart?
There is no evidence that it predicts anything. With two outcomes, any guess is right about half the time.
Why do other sites show percentages?
Some sites convert the chart's marks into percentages like 99% or 65%. Those numbers are invented, not measured, so we show the marks instead.
Does the chart change every year?
No. It uses only months, so it is the same every year.
Can this help me conceive a boy or a girl?
No. No calendar, chart or folk method can influence or predict a baby's sex, and we do not offer any gender selection tool. Sex selection is illegal in India and restricted in many other countries.
Is it legal to find out a baby's sex in India?
No. Under the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, determining or revealing the sex of a foetus is illegal in India, and so is sex selection. No doctor, clinic or test may tell you the baby's sex before birth. Folk methods like this one do not determine anything.
Does Power Calculators support gender prediction?
No. We do not support, promote or provide sex determination or sex selection, and we strongly oppose female foeticide. This page explains a piece of folklore and why it does not work. Every child, girl or boy, is equally precious.
