📘 About the Cholesterol Risk

This calculator summarizes a lipid profile and several common cardiovascular risk factors. It is not a diagnosis and it does not produce a clinical 10-year cardiovascular event probability.

Non-HDL cholesterol is calculated as total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol. General adult desirable levels commonly used for interpretation include total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL, LDL below 100 mg/dL, non-HDL below 130 mg/dL, and triglycerides below 150 mg/dL; HDL thresholds differ by sex.

The calculator also flags selected risk factors such as current smoking, diabetes, hypertension, family history and age. These factors can affect cardiovascular risk beyond the lipid numbers themselves.

🧮 Formula

Non-HDL cholesterol
Non-HDL = Total - HDL
Total cholesterol to HDL ratio
TC/HDL = Total / HDL
LDL to HDL ratio
LDL/HDL = LDL / HDL

Where

  • Non-HDL = Total cholesterol - HDL
  • Total/HDL ratio = Total cholesterol / HDL
  • LDL/HDL ratio = LDL / HDL
All cholesterol inputs are in mg/dL.

✏️ Worked example

Example lipid profile

You enter
Age45 years
SexMale
Total Cholesterol210 mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol45 mg/dL
LDL Cholesterol130 mg/dL
Triglycerides175 mg/dL
Current SmokingNo
DiabetesNo
High Blood Pressure / HypertensionYes
Family History of Premature Heart DiseaseNo / Unknown
You get
Non-HDL Cholesterol165
Total Cholesterol / HDL Ratio4.66667
LDL / HDL Ratio2.88889
Lipid Markers Outside General Desirable Range3
Additional Risk Factors Present2
LDL 190+ mg/dL Flag0
Triglycerides 500+ mg/dL Flag0

For total cholesterol 210, HDL 45, LDL 130 and triglycerides 175 mg/dL, the calculator derives non-HDL cholesterol and ratio values and flags the relevant markers.

💡 How to interpret the results

  • Use the lipid values together rather than relying on one number.
  • General adult desirable levels are total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL, LDL below 100 mg/dL, non-HDL below 130 mg/dL and triglycerides below 150 mg/dL.
  • HDL below 40 mg/dL in men and below 50 mg/dL in women is generally considered low.
  • An LDL of 190 mg/dL or higher or triglycerides of 500 mg/dL or higher deserves prompt discussion with a healthcare professional.

💡 Risk factors

  • Smoking, diabetes, hypertension, family history, age and other clinical factors can change cardiovascular risk.
  • This calculator does not combine these factors into a validated 10-year risk percentage.
  • For adults 30 to 79 without known cardiovascular disease, the AHA PREVENT equations are a separate clinician-oriented cardiovascular risk tool and require additional inputs such as systolic blood pressure, BMI and kidney function.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator give my chance of a heart attack?

No. It summarizes cholesterol measurements and selected risk factors but does not calculate a validated cardiovascular event probability.

What is non-HDL cholesterol?

Non-HDL cholesterol is total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol. It represents cholesterol carried by several atherogenic lipoproteins.

Is a high cholesterol result always dangerous?

Risk depends on the complete lipid profile and other factors such as age, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history and previous cardiovascular disease.

What does an LDL of 190 mg/dL or more mean?

It is a very high LDL level and should be discussed promptly with a healthcare professional.

Can this replace a doctor's advice?

No. It is an educational calculator and should not be used to diagnose or choose medication.
