๐Ÿ“˜ About the Pace Calculator

Pace is the amount of time required to cover one unit of distance. Runners commonly express pace as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile.

This calculator works in three directions: calculate pace from distance and time, calculate finish time from distance and target pace, or calculate distance from time and target pace.

All calculations use direct time, distance and unit-conversion mathematics rather than a performance prediction model.

The calculator displays pace in both minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile and also reports average speed in kilometers per hour and miles per hour.

The calculator supports custom distances as well as common running and road-race distances.

๐Ÿ’ก What is running pace

  • Pace is time divided by distance.
  • A pace of 5:00 per kilometer means each kilometer takes approximately five minutes at that average pace.
  • A lower pace number means a faster pace.
  • Pace is different from speed: pace measures time per distance while speed measures distance per time.

๐Ÿ’ก Pace formula

  • Pace per kilometer = total elapsed time in seconds divided by distance in kilometers.
  • Pace per mile = total elapsed time in seconds divided by distance in miles.
  • The resulting seconds are converted into minutes and seconds for display.
  • The calculator reports both min/km and min/mile so the result can be used with metric or imperial running measurements.

๐Ÿ’ก Finish time formula

  • Finish time = distance x pace.
  • The calculator first converts the selected target pace into seconds per kilometer.
  • The normalized pace is then multiplied by the distance in kilometers.
  • This projection assumes the same average pace is maintained for the entire distance.

๐Ÿ’ก Distance formula

  • Distance = elapsed time divided by pace.
  • When pace is entered in min/km, the calculation directly determines kilometers.
  • When pace is entered in min/mile, the calculator converts the pace to the equivalent metric value before calculating distance.
  • The final result is shown in both kilometers and miles.

๐Ÿ’ก Pace and speed conversion

  • Speed is the inverse relationship to pace.
  • Speed in km/h = distance in kilometers divided by elapsed time in hours.
  • Speed in mph = distance in miles divided by elapsed time in hours.
  • For a constant pace, km/h and min/km contain the same information expressed in opposite ways.

๐Ÿ’ก Kilometer and mile conversion

  • One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers.
  • One kilometer equals approximately 0.621371 miles.
  • Pace per mile is numerically larger than pace per kilometer because a mile is longer than a kilometer.
  • To convert seconds per kilometer to seconds per mile, multiply by 1.609344.

๐Ÿ’ก Supported distances

  • The calculator supports custom distances.
  • Preset distances include 400 meters, 800 meters, 1 kilometer, 1 mile, 2 miles, 5K, 5 miles, 10K, 10 miles, 15K, 20K, half marathon, 25K, 30K, marathon, 50K and 100K.
  • World Athletics lists standard road-race distances including Road Mile, 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, 10 Miles, Half Marathon, 25 km, 30 km, Marathon, 50 km and 100 km.
  • The marathon distance is 42.195 kilometers.

๐Ÿ’ก Race split calculations

  • The calculator also reports equivalent 400 meter, 1 kilometer and 1 mile split times from the calculated pace.
  • These splits assume an even pace.
  • Actual race splits can vary because of terrain, hills, turns, weather, congestion, strategy and changes in effort.

๐Ÿ’ก Using the calculator to plan a race

  • Choose Calculate Finish Time when you know the race distance and the pace you want to maintain.
  • Choose Calculate Pace when you already completed a distance and know your elapsed time.
  • Choose Calculate Distance when you know how long you will exercise and the pace you intend to maintain.
  • Use the same pace unit that matches your running watch, treadmill or race markers when convenient.

๐Ÿ’ก Pace versus actual performance

  • A calculated finish time is a mathematical projection, not a guarantee of actual performance.
  • Maintaining an identical pace becomes more difficult as distance increases.
  • Long-distance performance can be affected by fatigue, hydration, fueling, temperature, elevation, wind, terrain and race conditions.
  • A pace calculator does not account for these physiological or environmental factors.

๐Ÿ’ก Treadmill and outdoor running

  • The mathematical pace calculation is the same whether the distance was covered outdoors or on a treadmill.
  • For a treadmill, use the distance or speed actually displayed by the machine when calculating pace.
  • If a GPS device records a slightly different distance from the marked course, the calculated pace will also differ because pace is directly dependent on distance.

๐Ÿ’ก Walking pace

  • Pace is not limited to running.
  • The same time divided by distance calculation works for walking, hiking and other activities where distance and elapsed time are known.
  • For walking, pace can be useful for comparing sessions and planning distance targets.

๐Ÿ’ก Limitations

  • The calculator assumes the entered distance and elapsed time are accurate.
  • It calculates average pace and does not measure moment-to-moment changes in pace.
  • Projected finish times assume a constant average pace.
  • The calculator does not predict whether a person can physically sustain the calculated pace.
  • GPS distance, treadmill distance and officially measured race distance can differ slightly.

โ“ Frequently asked questions

What is a pace calculator?

A pace calculator determines how much time it takes to cover a unit of distance, normally expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile.

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide your total elapsed time by the distance covered. Convert the result into minutes and seconds per kilometer or per mile.

What is the formula for running pace?

Pace equals total time divided by distance. For min/km, divide total seconds by kilometers. For min/mile, divide total seconds by miles.

How do I calculate finish time from pace?

Multiply the distance by the pace. The calculator converts the pace to a consistent time-per-distance unit before multiplying.

How do I calculate distance from pace and time?

Divide elapsed time by pace. The result is the distance that can be covered if the specified average pace is maintained.

What is 5:00 per kilometer in miles?

A 5:00 per kilometer pace is approximately 8:03 per mile because one mile equals 1.609344 kilometers.

What is 8:00 per mile in kilometers?

An 8:00 per mile pace is approximately 4:58 per kilometer.

What pace do I need to run a 5K in 30 minutes?

You need an average pace of exactly 6:00 per kilometer, which is approximately 9:39 per mile.

What pace do I need for a 10K in 45 minutes?

You need an average pace of 4:30 per kilometer, which is approximately 7:14 per mile.

What pace is needed for a 2-hour half marathon?

A 2-hour half marathon requires approximately 5:41 per kilometer or 9:09 per mile.

What is marathon pace?

Marathon pace is the average pace maintained over the official marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers. This calculator can calculate marathon pace from a target finish time or finish time from a target pace.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace tells you how much time is needed per unit distance, such as 6:00 per km. Speed tells you how much distance is covered per unit time, such as 10 km/h.

Is a lower running pace faster?

Yes. A lower minutes-per-distance number means less time is required to cover the same distance and therefore represents a faster pace.

Can I calculate pace in miles?

Yes. You can use miles as the distance unit and the calculator will report minutes per mile as well as the equivalent minutes per kilometer.

Can I enter kilometers instead of miles?

Yes. The calculator supports kilometers and miles and automatically converts between them.

Can I use a custom distance?

Yes. Select Custom Distance and enter any distance in kilometers or miles.

Can I calculate my pace from a walking session?

Yes. Pace is a mathematical relationship between time and distance, so the same calculation works for walking as well as running.

Can I calculate treadmill pace?

Yes. Enter the distance and elapsed time from your treadmill session, or use the equivalent target pace and distance to calculate a projected finish time.

Is the calculated finish time guaranteed?

No. It is a mathematical projection assuming that the entered pace can be maintained continuously. Actual performance can change because of fatigue, terrain, weather and other conditions.

Why is my GPS pace different from my race pace?

GPS devices can record a slightly different distance from an officially measured course. Since pace is time divided by distance, a different recorded distance produces a different calculated pace.

What are standard road race distances?

World Athletics lists road-race distances including Road Mile, 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, 10 Miles, Half Marathon, 25 km, 30 km, Marathon, 50 km and 100 km.
